i think one cannot disagree that sammi possess singing techniques. it is
only her pronounciations of lyrics is too artificial and deliberate! she has
a sweet voice too. her success in hk popdom is due to her extraordinary chic
image which appaels to the younger generations. i think she has to thank
warners so much for bringing this side of her to the surface! even if
shirley is in the arena, i do not think she wld place intense compettion to
sammi coz their market target is different ^_^
everyone agrees that we have waited too long for the release of suke e's cd.
i recall someone has suggested a petition to polygram. are we still doing
it? someone said it may not be a gd thing to suke e (witness in the previous
ablum of grasshoper -- no advertsing) but i thnk it is better then nth
coming out from her. i bet she is changing record company amyways!!
best regards and happy new year to all.

Dear Shirley's fans,
Well, can we send our petition to the email addresses of Ming Pao, Next
Magazine etc.,
in addition to Polygram?

Here are several useful email addresses and WWW sites
1. NEXT MEDIA
email: editorial@nextmedia.com.hk
WWW: http://www.nextmedia.com.hk/nextmag/contact.htm
2. Ming Pao
email: feedback@mingpao.com
WWW: http://www.mingpao.com/mail.htm
3. Sing Tao Daily News (Editorial Section)
email: info@singtao.com
It is important that we sent our petition to at least one of these three
places. Simply sending petition to Polygram is fruitless, bX Polygram
can simply discard our emails.
We should exert pressure on Polygram through mass media.
I personally think that it would be a good idea to send our petition to
the
Next Media, I still remember it has been Apple Daily who informed us
that the publication of Shirley's new album is intentionally delayed by
Polygram.
Happy new year to all of you!

WW: I agree. No promotion is better than no CD at all. Let's take
action!
The longer we hold-off, the longer we have to wait for this CD!!! Let's
show
them how angry we are. We are not going to get anywhere unless we all
come together and team up against PolyGram.

Subject: Petitioning
I think the petition idea is fabulous. I don't know if anyone had seen the
movie, 'Shawshenk Redemption', but in the movie, one of the prison inmates had
written to the government in hopes of receiving funds to annex the library. At
first, he wrote one letter a day and sent them off daily. Eventually, he ended
up sending two letters a day until the government finally gave in and sent the
prison enough money to build up the entire library.
Couldn't we in theory try the same method? Wouldn't that be better than
nothing at all? If we each of us wrote to the Record Companies in request of
Shirley's CD release, they would idealistically see the demand for her music,
and might possibly do something about it. For those of you interested in
sending a letter to Polygram, the address is as follows: Polygram Records
Ltd, 6/F Railway Plaza, 39 Chatham Road South, Kowloon, Hong Kong. And their
phone and fax numbers are 23015888, and 23127328 resppectively.
I am unfamiliar with the newspaper (Ming Pao) and magazine addresses, so if
someone could supply me with such, I would love to address my inquiries of
Shirley to them as well. Please let me know if anyone is interested. Perhaps
we can decide on a certain day to send them out so that they become inundated
with our voices in the mail. One voice sometimes speaks in greater volume
where scattered voices may fall short.

Excellent, excellent speech!! Encore!
(laughing...) Yes, I'm a retard...
No, let's get serious here... I'm a big retard...
No, I mean, let's get REAL serious here.
Umm... I agree to the "one voice" suggestion. I think we should think of a way to
come up with a formal (or informal, whatsoever) petition with all (I don't know how
many can we get) our, say-- signatures, or "demands" all together in one single
e-mail or letter. Well, I guess preferably letter rather than e-mail or fax 'cuz
it's more official and polite. But what should we include in this "letter" and how
and who's gonna do it? Now I'm sure that there MUST be someone (and a lot of
people) out there that's interested in this plea (like me). So first of all we
should figure out HOW to write to WHO (Polygram? the other medias?). Should some
asses stand up and do something instead of us just bullshitting here begging for
people to participate? We don't even have an idea of how we're gonna proceed due to
our lack of unity. We only know how to give opinions and suggestions but we NEVER
took action. So crowd, please do something. Although I don't know how 'cuz I'm
also one of those asses who has no answers to the above questions, hee :) So if
anyone figures out how we're gonna proceed, please do write.
Forgive my language.
And-- guys, I know this is a hard project. I can't imagine what we're gonna get out
of this. Can we get what we really want here? ie. the release of Shirley's album?
Or purely attention? Would our action mean anything to them? And what effects
would this have on Shirley's image to the public?

WW: If anything, it would help Shirley's image by focussing more publicity
on her. Maybe the public will become more aware of PolyGram's cheap
practices and support Shirley more. The best way to get sympathy is
to make the opposition look like the villain. Let's not waver

I just wish so hard that this would be reliable. I remember when I went back to
HK in Christmas '95, Shirley had some new songs out (ۣ, ܤAJ,
etc). So I was hoping to buy Shirley's new CD (if she had one out), the store
clerk in HongKong Records said it'll come out at the end of January 96!! But
now it's been a FULL YEAR!!!
BTW, thanx Will for the letter format!

i do not know french either. but i could not find the word "dela" in a
french dictionary. there is only a word "dela" with a little commer thing on
the "a" which means "beyond".
anyhow, a large part of africa used to be french coluny in the beginning of
the 19th century. so if "dela" is a word of both roots, i am not surprised.
i have a african friend who told me there was a lot of "french" vocab in
there tribal language! That was why she usually score high in her french class.

Hi all e' fans,
when i watch this email
i would like to say something
i think
whatever we are angry with Polygram
we should be polite to write the complaint letters
since
they may be distributed to public
if
we write something rude or impolite
it will give a bad effect to the shirley
so
before u do anything
please
think of shirley first

Hey, this is Bonnie, remember? (We met on Dec 29 in H.K.)
Wow, I didn't know that VCD is mono; no wonder they are so cheap. I
watched Shirely's VCD (MTV, not the concert) finally, but I didn't notice
the "mono", probably because the TV and the LD/VCD thing are connceted to
the Hi-Fi system; anyway, I love all the MTVs, super!

Well, if you watch the VCD on those CD-i player, sure it's in stereo. If
you view them on PC or Mac, it's all program dependent. I am using Xing
MPEG viewer, which has the sound quality control. If your program have
same feature, be sure to set the output frequency to 22 KHz or 44 KHz
(default is 11 KHz, which is mono output.)
hope this help.

VCDs are stereo, the fact that it's mono is the voice. If you listen
to the raw output (from Xing and not treat with Hi-Fi) and turn off one
speaker, you'll either hear the singer's voice or accompanied melodies,
same for so-called Bi-lingual VCDs, you have to turn down either one
speaker for either language.

It's not program dependent, VCD specs already says VCD has only 2 sound
channels, left and right, other stuff just depend on your program or Hi-Fi
how to treat them (mixing, isolating background music, dolby surround...)
output frequency is to the sound quality, 44kHz means CD quality sound
but not necessarily stereo, while 11kHz is near AM quality (human voice).
The more kHz you acquire, the more processing power you need (a soundcard
don't rely on CPU like the GUS would definitely help) to get the sound
out.
sorry for out of focus discussion.

Subject: Sample petition letter
Dear fellow fans,
I have written a letter of what might be a possible petition note for PG or
other media publications. Please edit and comment at will so that we can
actually have a physical letter to present to them. I hope we can all comment
on this for its appropriateness or inappropriateness in terms of its political
correctness (even for its grammatical correctness). Let's get together and
project our views NOW.
Thanks!!!
"Dear PolyGram,
The injustice of your under representation of Shirley Kwan's albums are
offensive to many of us. As an artist who in the past have rounded up much
praise from the public, her work is greatly admired and much anticipated.
Although her contract may have ended, I believe her last album was at the time
under your company's label. Does this represent an example of your company's
ethics in so far as your treatment of your current and future artists?
In light of our patience, we have all waited for Ms. Kwan's new album for well
over a year, and up to now, it is still an item that is much coveted. Where
does the discrepancy lie in your reluctance of releasing her work? We have all
taken precautions to suppress our anger, but after this long expanse of time,
we are quite at an end with the politics and tactics.
We are by no means an unappreciative group of fans, but we would be ever so
grateful for any information that you may provide concerning this issue for our
peace of mind. Thank you very much. We are eager for your response.
Humbly yours,
(our names)

Hi John,
I saw two portable VCD player models in H.K., Panasonic and Sony. Sony is
about HKD$2050 and Panasonic is about HKD$2290 ("water" product).
Panasonic is more expensive because it has Karaoke function and some
people say it sounds better than Sony, but Sony is better looking than
Panasonic. So have you heard anything about them? because I'm thinking
about asking my friend to bring me one when he comes back.
Thanx for the info.

In light of our patience, we have all waited for Shirley Kwan's new
album for more than a year. Where does the discrepancy lie in your
reluctance of releasing her work? We have all
taken precautions to suppress our anger until now. We are quite at an
end with the politics and tactics.
We are by no means an unappreciative group of fans, but we would be ever
so grateful for any information that you may provide concerning this issue
for our peace of mind.
Thank you very much. We are eager for your response.

Sure no problem.
"Dear PolyGram,
The injustice of your under-representation of Shirley Kwan's latest
album is offensive to many of us. As an artist who in the past has
rounded up much praise from the public, Shirley's work is greatly
admired
and much anticipated.
Although her contract may have ended, we believe Shirley last album
was finished before she left your company. Does postponing the
release of
her lastest album due to some contract-related conflicts represent an
example of your company's ethics in so far as your treatment of your
current and future artists?

rounded up much praise from the public, Shirley's work is greatly
admired and much anticipated.
Although her contract may have ended, we believe Shirley last album
was finished before she left your company. Does postponing the
release of her lastest album due to some contract-related conflicts
represent an example of your company's ethics in so far as your
treatment of your current and future artists?
In light of our patience, we have all waited for Shirley Kwan's new
album for more than a year. Where does the discrepancy lie in your
reluctance of releasing her work? We have all taken precautions to
suppress our anger until now. We are quite at an end with the politics
and tactics.
We are by no means an unappreciative group of fans, but we would be
ever so grateful for any information that you may provide concerning
this issue for our peace of mind.
Thank you very much. We are eager for your response.

Hi All,
I regret to say that after so many of you have signed onto the letter, I have
found a typo on the second paragraph beginning with "Although her contract may
have ended, we believe last album was finished before she left your
company." It should be " Although her contract may have ended, we believe
last album was finished before she left your company." So if you
don't mind, please sign on the end of this newly revised letter: By the way,
who is sending this list out and on what medium? Is someone printing it out to
be faxed or mailed, or does someone want to e-mail it to the correct places
with the collaborative names?

This is a complete list of all your names extracted out from those messy "replies" of
our petition. The letter itself has also been corrected. Those who haven't added
their names in yet can do so now and I'll fix them later. I've also enclosed, well,
almost, everybody's e-mail addresses so that PolyGram won't think that we're using
fake names (unless you don't want your e-mail addressed be revealed, otherwise, please
fill in your e-mail addresses that are missing.

Dear PolyGram,
The injustice of your under-representation of Shirley Kwan's latest album is offensive
to many of us. As an artist who in the past has rounded up much praise from the

Although her contract may have ended, we believe Shirley's last album was finished
