I was shopping at Parker Place (Vancouver) and saw on the notice board
in one of the CD stores that says Shirley's CD's coming out soon. I
asked the lady and she said that they haven't received official notice
yet but if they do, it'll be a week before the album actually comes
out. Maybe they put it there just because the song Shirley sang with
Chan Kei (DRۣi) is on various charts now.

Also, I was reading the newspaper today, and what- Chong Lai Tai 玀R{
is going to sign Cinepoly to become a singer! I mean, she can't even
speak Cantonese properly!

i am listening to mok karen man wai's cd now. she does sound like shirley in
some songs e,g, floating sand esp. she uses that kinda singing techniques.
but she is a messo alto w/ a 'sandier' voice... then shirley!!

Dear all,

First of all, I am BIG Shirley fan & I have been waiting for her new album
for soooooooo long.

Now, although "Chong Lai Tai" & "Gigi Leung Wing Kei" can not sing as well
as other "professional" artist (like our Shirley), I have to admit that
both Chong & Gigi are so pretty.

Just wondering, what will happen if Gigi is my girlfriend. And we go
together and enjoy Shirley's live performance at HK stadium. Of cause, me
& Gigi will get the front row seat and can go to the backstage, you know
shake hands with Shirley, take pictures etc.

Isn't that GREAT!!

Well, I know I know, that will not happen & I am only day-dreaming. But
one thing I really hope will happen is that we will see Shirley's new album
coming out SOON. Hope that is real & not just my another daydream only.

I live in Vancouver too. There's two stores both sell CDs. Which one
are you talking about? Last week I had asked one of the CD stores,
which near the Pet shop, about the release date of Shirley's latest
album but she said she didn't know Shirley was going to put out an new
album. Therefore, I'd like to know which store(s) have you visited? :)

WW: Of course Woo Pui Wai can't replace Faye. And she knows it...they will
take all the songs at Cinepoly written for Faye and give them to Woo
Pui Wai. How lame. Woo Pui Wai said in an interview that her voice is
too harsh and she will have to go through alot of voice training to sound
anywhere as beautiful as Faye's voice.

WW: YES YES YES!!!! This album is FABULOUS!!!! She sounds too similar to
Shirley...but is no replacement for Shirley.... they both have the same
music influences...Ella Fitzgerald.... I love Karen Mok's
falsetto...it sounds like Shirley's falsetto in that Latin-sounding track
"Darker Than Night"...FABULOUS.... and in "Floating Sand", you wouldn't
even be able

No way! Shirley announced that she was not given up her singing
career, just take a long break and enjoy her life with her family.

Now she's participating in film making, later... she will be back to
the public. :>

We're still waiting... calm and patient... heeeee... :> At the moment,
save more money for her concert tickets, I hope to have another concert

JoJo, Lee Qunn Jo. She used to be the chorus of Alan's and Shirley's
songs. And in Shirley's concert '95, she was in the chorus team, too.

Yes, don't you hate it? I hate it when she has the same name as I!!
(But it's not me!!) If you bought Shirley's concert in Karaoke, I
remember that she said thanks to JoJo who wrote her this song "Are there
any real friends in life?" I bet Shirley never guessed that Polygram
would actually use this girl, g ("Li Jun Zhu" in Mandarin), to
fight against her (whom she thought was a "friend")!

this is nth personal, but i do not think we shld see that chorus gal as our
enemy. maybe none of them had expected that Li Jun Zhu wld have be signed
under polygram. i have watched long ago a documentary about chorus ppl from
the "TVB hk style 60 mins +" (monday report). they same the pay for chorus
is extremely low and blah blah, cannot make a living thru it and it is not
respect to an artist. so they all sang out of 'interest" and had to keep
that part time. and a girl in it said her family was against her singing
career as a chorus coz of no $$. and she said if i wld have been an on-stage
performer rather than chrous, may be my family wld be happier. start to
think of it, that might be Li Jun Zhu, you never know... :p

anyways, my point is: shirley is unique and no one can take her place.
right? so, we shld not be too hostile to those who 'imitate' shirley. it is
bcoz she is sooooo good that ppl have to copy. is not this the market-demend
theory? (where r the econ ppl?) but she is still the best. look at faye wong
marr, a lot of ppl imitate her, but she is still here... there is one and

WW: Yeah....it is kinda flattering isn't it?..that PolyGram is willing to
fork out $1 000 000 HK to promote "another Shirley Kwan"...that shows you
that Shirley has high market value... BUT, I don't think we should
automatically
hate her because PolyGram is replacing her with Shirley...this is up to the
person who listens to her to decide whether they like her or not...remember
Capital Artists replaced Sammi Cheng with Yeung Cheen Wah (Miriam Yeung)?...
as shown in this example, the public prefers the "real thing"...despite
lots of promotions, Miriam Yeung still isn't popular... who knows people
may like Shirley even more after seeing this Jojo clone girl...

Hi everyone,

"Dancing on the cloud" has been played in Vancouver already. Heard
it once on AM 1470.
Regarding the CD store at Parker Place: they have Shirley's album
written down on the new release list for a long time, so don't get too
excited. Even the store owner knows that Polygram will use Shirley's old
albums to compete against any of her albums with the new company (although
it is not obvious which one yet). Anyway, guess this new song +
compilation should be coming out soon. Hope this brings back the public
attention to such a wonderful singer.

really? actually, i have seen that horse riding mtv (IN CANTONESE) b4 the
boat cruise MTV when on air. i thought the horse riding one was better. it
was showed when the jap series was on air. then when it finished and ppl
find that song was a hit, they made another one with the boat cruise in
(main color blue). but of course the karaoke MTV is different. so, tvb
reuse the old horse-riding footage for the mandarin "lan tak yau ching yan"
smart choice. i cld not get it on tape long time ago though.

it might actually not be a bad thing to get her film and album showed the
same time. not for us coz we wld buy the cds anyways but for others who are
more ambivalent with shirley. but is not it true that polygram has plenty
of unissued shirley's songs to use? i support the idea to send the petition
to polygram and the mass media to help shirley with a "popularity boast".

who still keeps a copy of the petition that we have signed?

dear all,

well, I know i shouldn't be doing this 'cuz i'm supposed to be studying
for my midterm. anyway, I was just listening to Shirley's previous 2
mandarin albums. I love number 7 "I'll follow you" (A) in her
first mandarin album very much. I don't understand why they didn't plug
this song on the radio, or why it wasn't included in her "mai luen"
(g) mandarin compilation. I mean, it's a very romantic love song and
it's good for karaoke too. I remember at the time when this album was
out, I kept repeating this song and the lyrics made me cry. Anyway, #9
"can't let go" (ۣo) is quite good too. But usually the "zing suen"
albums never compile ALL the best songs.

WW: MAN! Piss me right off. I am ANGRY at PolyGram and if I could scream
at them I would....we are letting Shirley down by sitting around and not doing
anything.... Let's stop being sooo lazy and each individually
send letters to show how we all protest this poor marketing strategy.
Shirley is literally being misused and abused and if you guys care, you would've
all sent out letters long ago, not screw around with a petition letter
which is disorganized. There are power in numbers and flooding their
mailboxes is the most logical way to get things done. So lets not waste time.
I know you are all busy, but taking a couple minutes to express how you feel
is nothing if we see the CD released sooner. Let's get moving!

When mailing your letters CC to the following:
editorial@nextmedia.com.hk, info@singtao.com, mingpao@mingpao.com,
mpweekly@mingpao.com

Again, don't worry about letter format...write from the heart...let them
know how you really feel about PolyGram's actions towards Shirley.

Subject: Today's news: Poll result - Shirley Kwan most wanted as "Snow Wolf Lake" actress

Today's Apple Daily,

An RTHK programme conducted an audience survey for the best actress/singer suitable
to be the substitute actress for Jacky Cheung's "Snow Wolf Lake" (for those of you
who don't know what happened, the secondary actress (oops, forgot her name, not Kit
Chan) is "fai"ed 'cos her performance is not expectedly good, especially Cantonese) and if
Sandy Lam would accept the role.

Poll results shows Shirley Kwan is the most wanted actress since she had not appeared
publicly for a long and is free at the moment, and since she worked with Jacky before so
communications would not be a problem.

The second and third are Pricilla Chan and Sandy Lam, so audience even suggested May Law
and Kwok Hor Ying.

In addition, most audience would like Sandy to accept the offer as she has not appeared for
a long time like Shirley.

Dear 'e fans,

I am just listening to CR2's program and the DJs said that they have been
many faxes asking about Shirley's news, mostly what album company she will
sign for and when her new album will be released. They said that they have
no idea about which company she will choose as no official announcement has
been made till now, from her nor her former company. But in fact, many
companies had contacted her about the contract matter.

Besides, the DJs said that Shirley's new album will called "sum ling

wondering what the cover pix will be, new or just the old ones.

I think it's better than nothing to hear some news from the radio and I

Wei Iganatius:...umm, Kit Chan (Chan Geet Yee) is the secondary actress in
SWL...
the original main actress Yan Wei has been "fei"d...because of her Cantonese and
general inability to handle the role...it has been confirmed that Sandy
Lam has flown back to HK to start reheasring... GO SANDY!!!

WW: Really?..that's great news. BUT, considering Shirley's voice texture,
she would not
be chosen for the role based on her vocal range..the lead female for
musicals are
almost 100% of the time sopranos, and Shirley is not a soprano, but more an
alto...
Karen Mok Mun Wai, another one of my faves, was turned down for the rule
based primarily
on this...

As well, someone reported her new CD will be out on the 29th?..is this true?
especially
after HMV said that it won't be out till June?!?!....I don't know who to

WW: Forget the petition letter. It looks suspicious when it doesn't actually
have all our actual signatures on it... it's more effective to catch their
attention by EACH INDIVIDUALLY mailing out our feelings about the Shirley

Hi all,

I have read a message in Sing Po (Ϭҿ) today (14-03-97) saying that
Shirley will join EMI (the company with Cass Pang) sometimes
later.

Wish we can really get Shirley's new CD by 29-03-97.

        Regards,

Hi Fans,
Do you think Shirley will become EMI's first lady(@j) if she really
join to EMI?I think Shirley will replace Cass Pang's position!!
Because Cass Pang is not as popular as a year ago.
	Do you agree?

I think she will be the same position as Cass, as Cass got lots of fans
in recent years, however... Shirley is a number one singer already, so I
think she will be treated kind in EMI. :>

I see EMI push Cass's songs to the radio quite frequently, I hope
Shirley will get the same! Then we can see Shirley in media often!

In my opinion, EMI and Warning are good choices among the other record
companies, I was quite worry about Shirley's choice, now I'm pleased.

Still waiting for her new album... :>

Didn't Faye just join EMI as well? Wouldn't it be hard for shirley to get
into the spotlight with cass AND faye since both are still quite popular?
hmmm, it might have been better to sign with cinepoly (faye's former) or
warner... i guess we'll just have to wait and see on this.

If it is true that Faye joined "EMI", I don't think it is good for Shirley
if she joins "EMI".

On the other hand, I will not suggest Shirley go to Warner. With Sammi
(and her manager Li Chung) in "Warner", there is no chance for Shirley.

"Cinepoly" is not a bad choice, but I still believe "Rock Records" is the
best.

Hard to say, coz Cass and Shirley are very different, their target markets
are probably very different, too. They both sing real good, do I think
the competition is a healthy one.

Sudden Weekly this week:

Shirley demands salary of $15mil for 2 years - rumour told
Record companies refuse to sign

The salary of $15mil Shirley demanded including 4 cantonese and 4 mandrain
albums in 2 years. In order for the record company not to loose money to
Shirley each album must have at least 156,000 sales for $12 share to the
singer, otherwise the record company has to shell out the remaining to
the singer. However, report says Shirley's sales figures in previous
albums are more or less 50,000 and the last one (Time Favourites) only
reaches 100,000 (I'm pretty speculate about this), so following such
figures Shirley could only get a share of $4.8 mil so the record company
has to shell out $10.2 mil.

When asked, PolyGram adviced they are unable to reach an agreement with
both parties. Kwan Wei Lun refused to comment about the $15mil rumour,
just said if it is real, the record company will have a hard time.

Another record company rumoured to sign Shirley, Go East, told the
reporter they will not consider to sign Shirley for some untold reason.

Fitto manager, Yip Shun Yan commented, "we're still negoiating with
Shirley about cooperation, but will not have official comment at this
time." Mr. Yip refused to comment about the $15mil rumour but he
added "the most important thing is ۷N, money is only minor."

Reporter is unable to reach Shirley herself since her phone and pager
number are changed. Her assistant Ann has not been able to contact her
as well, and she neither knows if Shirley has reached an agreement nor
the $15mil rumour.

WW: Hi there. Shirley is an alto, and as Anna specified even more
clearly, she is a mezzo-alto. According to music, there are four categories
of vocal ranges: 1. Soprano (the thinner voice sound which can hit high notes).
Examples of true sopranos are Faye Wong Fei, Mavis Fan Hiu Huen, Cass Phang
Ling. 2. Then the next highest range is what is called Alto (lower ranged
female voice which is often thicker in texture)...true examples of
this are Anita Mui Yeem Fong, Paula Chui Siu Fung, etc. Since singers like
Shirley are of neither extreme, soprano or alto, we classify her in-between
in a category called mezzo alto which means middle alto...other examples
of messo alto are Sammi Cheng Sao Mun and Karen Mok Mun Wai.
3.The third category is tenor (a lighter textured high-pitched male voice).
Examples of this
are George Lam Chi Cheung, Jeff Chang Suin Jeet, etc. 4. Then finally we have
bass (who are the thicker-voiced males with a lower vocal range). There are
fewer
examples of this category in Chinese music like Andy Lau Dut Wah. Baritone
is what is in-between
tenor and bass...most male singers in Chinese pop are in the baritone range
like Jacky Cheung, Edmond Leung.

Haven't see it at SF yet, but by looking at the name I think they just
re-release the 'Ex All Time Favorites' CD, but it's the remastered version.
It's like 'Faye Best', same songs, but with a cheap cover...*sigh*

BTW, anyone have luck on grabbing Faye's newest EP? It's sold out over

Subject: SHirley is at time a "soprano?"

Hi all wonderful Shirley's fans,

Has anyone seen Shirley perform in Lam Chi Chong's show a while
ago? She sang in a real high voice with Lam. I think this is what is
unique about her, her range is so broad. If you have seen that show,
you will understand why I sometimes consider her as a soprano too!

WW: Guys in Toronto, if you're interested in the Ex All Time Faves 88
Remastered, it's available at Fair Sound on Midland and Finch.

As well, just as clarification, just because you can hit high notes,
it doesn't make you a soprano...it's more your voice texture...the
thickness, and when your voice resonates most...Shirley'v voice
is all of the above at the alto level...she is not a soprano.

Is it sure that Shirley is going to join Fitto (Fatal!) for 2 years?

>From Next Magz last Thursday, it seems that Shirley is going to
sign Fitto for $15,000,000 for 2 years, we're just waiting for final
agreements. It's more or less like the post I did in the past week.

Since Fitto is almost new from management to singers (only Chui Hok
Yee is still there) I think the new Fitto could do something interesting.

although the past history of fitto is not so good, coz the singers
under this company do not have much obvious success in their career, anyway,
maybe fitto has some new arrangment in it's stratgey, anyway, hope shirley
will have some surprising 'chemical reaction' with the company and can help
her career to be more successful!!
