Subject: Shirley latest CD release in HK?

Wee, so we have a shirley list at last, WOW! This is cool, i've been
waiting for this to happen for a long time.

I'm just wondering what others think of latest shirley CD. I read a little
about it on the web page and saw only the cover of it so far (my computer
can't read Chinese). Is there any new remix/song/photo in this album?
Would you recommend to get this CD if you have most of her albums from the
past? CD here in UK is getting more and more expensive, something like
HK$200!! This ain't fair but i might get it if it's a really good
collection of songs.

That's all for now, take care.

of loneliness; but the most terrifying loneliness is not experenced by
anyone and can be understood by only a few. I compare the panic in this
kind of loneliness to the dog we see running frastically down the road
pursuing the family car. He is not really being left behind for the family
knows it is to return, but for that moment in his limited understanding, he
is being left alone forever, and he has to run and run to survive. It is
no wonder that we make terrible choices in our lives to avoid loneliness."

Hi every Shirley Kwan fans,

It's nice to have the 'e list for shorten the distance between us. Ok,
I can't stop to browse 'e space everyday after my first visit to it.
Heard from the authors that the 'e space will soon have its version 2
and it will be totally different from the old one. Of course, it will
be even more fabulous than 'e space 1, although 'e space is the best
already.

I'm quite excited that Shirley will have her next movie soon, although
she may appear on the screen for not more than 3 minutes, but we have
been waiting for her appearance on media for several months after the
'Salem Concert.' Have you bought her latest compilation yet? It's too
good! It includes many of her all time hits... of course, the mastering
of this album is excellence!

Reply to the 'e space if you have time, bye!

Regards,
Jaffe.

No. There're no new/remixed tracks in this compilation. And the only photo
in the "package" in the one you see on the cover. The CD is shipped in a
cardbox + plastic enclosure, not in a CD jewel case. A no-frills lyrics
sheet is included.

Well, if you listen carefully (Might be easier if you've a million-dollar
hifi system. I don't.), the fidelity really is better, much better, in
fact, for the older recordings. IMHO, it's a perfectly good compilation,
but the lack of new tracks limits its "must-get-now" factor. If the prices
are outrageous in the UK, I think you can wait a while and get it when you
stop by Hongkong later.

Subject: Shirley in any other formats?!

Hi again everyone. Thanks for the detailed description of the CD Keith.

Now I've heard that CDV (or is it VCD) is really popular in HK and many
entertainers are releasing their stuffs on such format, like Sammy and
Jacky have both released their concert or songs (i was told about it so i
ain't sure)... Now i'm just wondering if Shirley is gonna release her
'greatest' in CDV form. It's surely a lot cheaper than buying LDs.

Oh, and if there happens to be a (official) release of such CDV, what
exactly do i expect from it. Is it like loads of MTV in it or just a few
MTVs and a few songs put together? I remember i got a VCD a long time ago
from Tat Ming and it was like one MTV with 3-4 songs on it. I know, i'm
way behind in all these but it'd be great if you could fill me the gap.
TIA.

One more thing, i really like the Shirley song in Lau e Tat's CD, and that
CD is a lot better than i expected!

That's all for now folks, take care.

Yes. And we have to point out strongly on our site that the ONLY browser

My name is Leung Ming Kan, a student studying computer science in The
Chinese University Of Hong Kong. The first Shirley's album I owned is
"Happy are those in love". (lan tak yau ching yan)

I was told (from the news page of 'e space) that the contract is ready,
just waiting for signing.

The lowest price I saw in HK is HK$68. However, since the demand is too
high, those shops which selling at the price changed their mind and
marked it $88.

If you are using English Windows 95/NT4, you can read Chinese Characters by
downloading Chinese Language Pack from M$.

http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/ieadd/0200.htm

It is for MSIE3. After installation, netscape navigator can display Chinese
characters well, too. (setting the fonts yourself, of course). I don't
know whether or not it works if you don't have IE installed.

You got VCD long time ago, didn't you? I think this should be a CDV,
which can be played in most LD players.
Today, the mainstream VCDs should contain 10 tracks (MTVs) on one disc.

As heard, Polygram has already prepared a contract for
Suk 'e. I just want to ask for your opinion on whether
that is a good idea to change for a new company rather
than staying in Polygram?

I have asked some non-fans of Shirley this question.
They just tell me that it's a good idea since they
can observe that the style of Shirley change too
rapidly due to different producer of each album. Also
they can feel that after Priscilla back, Polygram seems
pay less attention on her.

P.S. This is not a vote!! Don't send Yes/No ans.. ^_^

I have a friend in broadcasting industry telling me Polygram is

Example is Amanda Lee's recent CD.

Maybe that is another reason why Suk 'e do not sign on the

I'm a frequently visitor of "Wan Chai 188", I know there WERE 4 pieces
of Shirley's CDV in there, the prices are TERRIBLE! Range from 600 to
1500. I've asked the shop keeper and he said some are his own
collection and some are sell for others.

Recently I found all are disappeared, I don't know whether they have
been sold or they are taken back by the owners. Anyway, I hope to own
these, too bad I don't have such amount of money.

RE: Priscilla's and Shirley's albums to be issued at the same time
It doesn't sound good to me, because it'll make both of them compete
against each other, this would then cause probably a reduction in the
amount of albums that could have been sold out. And remember this very
fact: Priscilla's album is generally much more best-selling than
Shirley's. I'm by no means saying that Priscilla is better than Shirley.
I think the reason is that Priscilla's songs are, overally speaking,
more "commercialized" than Shirley's. I personally love listening to
Shirley more than Priscilla, but I really worry about Shirley's status

May I have a different idea:
I think that one of the obvious advantages that Shirley remains in
Polygram is that she can still work with Joseph Yip (the productor of
ALL previous Cantonese albums of Shirley), only seems knowing Shirley's
talent and style best.

years Shirley being with it!
I will be disappointed again if Shirley opt for it again!
I think that last time Polygam had hidden her for nearly a year before they
renewed its contract with her is under any circumstances ,unreasonable and
unacceptable!
I would prefer Rock which gives artist more freedom and respect and whose
label has become a guarantee in quality!

Well, my opinon to your question is that, Ii think she should stay within
polygram, but maybe to a branch like GO EAST or CINEPOLY, Faye and Kelly are
doing great in them. I just think that POLYGRAM has too many singers to take
care of, and if she stays there, she's not going to get enough attention.

Hey, my name is Kel and I'm studying Biochemistry in the University of Waterloo
in Canada. I'm both Shirley and Priscilla's fans. So their CD's coming out
together means trouble to me. I may end up buying both of them. And replying to
your comment, I do think that Shirley is losing her status in Polygram. I
really want to see to what extend will Polygram go with advertising her new
album. So I guess we shouldn't assume anything until then...

been treating Shirley well lately. But hey, it was the same company which made
her become our favourite, and they really treated her well a few years back.
They even released a KARAOKE disc especially for her two or three years ago.
Since Polygram has so many singers to look after, it's either that Shirley
switch to another company (I like ROCK too) or else we can't expect much from
it.

WW: In my opinion, Shirley should just stick with PolyGram...
they've done a pretty good job with her in the past.....giving her
lots of room to experiment and learn.... as well, they've
helped achieving excellent success last year (eg. Hit Top Silver
Award)...... I think her best years are still ahead of her at PolyGram...

If Shirley moves to a new company like Marlboro, I think it would have adverse
affects on her career...new companies often have smaller budgets, which
certainly affects ones room for experimenting and potential.....one bonus
could be
that Shirley can finally be the "BIG" sister of a company like Marlboro if she
decides to leave PolyGram....

Bad news, Shirley's CD is delayed until mid October...PolyGram has decided
not to release her CD with Priscilla's.....they'll release Priscilla's this
week and
wait a while for Shirley's CD! Boo!

It would be a pleasure if you are my friend and fans, Fredredick....
Please give me your reply if you are the one and we can talk about Shirley by
this mail... It's fun!
I think it would be better for Shirley to try some other new company such
as the Marlboro because she will be the first female artist in contract and
the company will have lots of budget for her to explore her talent. Some
people may think that new company may not have the financial power to
support the artists, however, Marlboro is difference! Just think about how
Marlboro sponsor Polygram in the MARLBORO RED HOT HIT.
I believe that Shirley will have more chance in a new and strong company.
It's not been very fair for Shirley in Polygram as there are too many other
artists for the to spend the budget, like Jacky Cheung and Leon Lai...there
will be no room for Shirley to have better future and explosure...
Anyway, I hope you the the friend that I know. Please reply ASAP!

Yours Sincerely,

Yes, this is a universal fact. A good thing doesn't necessarily imply it
will become popular. You can see in the computer software industry.

Shirley has the one and only producer for her Cantonese albums. He is
Joseph Ip. He is also the producer of Alan Tam's album. Therefore, you
can find they have duets quite frequently.

I can't agree more.

Although PG produces many commercial albums (including those
compilations) I find this company is still the most powerful
records company in Hong Kong. "Powerful" here refers to the
ability to produce good album, its financial status, its size,
its marketing strategy, company image...

Shirley admits Joseph Ip is an important person in her life.
Also, I observed there are more than one occasion that Shirley
mentioned he teaches her so much in the field of music.

I believe No one in 'e list would deny Joseph. The songs in the
albums are all well-chosen. Also, I don't know whether you
guys notice the production team of each album. I just find the
people in the team are not changed a lot since the very first
album. Why Shirley's songs are that great? It is just because
they are produced by Joseph's team. (Her concert last year was
backed by the same team, too.) He is THE person who understands
what Shirley needs and what suits her most.

Please note the production team is under PG label. So it is
not easy that Shirley can keep co-operating with them after
leaving PG. However, there is one solution. Go to one of PG's
subsidiaries, i.e.GoEast, Cinepoly and Musician. However, I
just treat they are all the same company. :-) Just like lexus
and toyota.

Moving to another company is just like a gamble. Hacken Lee is
an example. He left PG and went to Star. And now he goes to
Music Impact. He just wasted several years in Star. Don't why,
I still prefer the songs which were released under PG's label. :-)

More than one person suggested Shirley should get into Rock
record. Yes, this is not a bad choice. However, this company is
too taiwanese style, which doesn't suit Shirley's western
style. Also I think there is still a distance between PG and Rock.

As a fan who loves her songs, I would prefer Shirley staying in
a company that keeps producing good songs rather than makes her
popular.

Hello everyone,

After reading today's news, seems Shirley's going to seek for other
music company. I'm quite worry about her future. As LMK and other's
opinion, I also prefer Shirley stay in Polygram, although Polygram seems
use her new album to (pursuade) her to stay with them. (I'm quite angry
with their strategy)

In Polygram, there are many people that Shirley worked with for a long
time, of course, Shirley+Joseph Ip could make really good production!
Anyway, I hope Shirley will have a even more bright future no matter she
join which new company or stay in Polygram.

Jaffe.

first of all, i'd like to thank to the host who organized this chat site (or
whatever it is called). and you may want to save this file in the hard
drive before reading cuz it's pretty long. for the sake of all the fans of
shirley, i guess i'm writing to express my opinion about everything
concerning the pop queen.

i don't know, maybe i'd wanna talk about a bit of stuff here. i've liked
her since the release of her very first album, and i've liked every tiny
thing about that woman. from what i remember, she was doing ok until the
spring of '92 where she got those braces. That's when her album got delayed
or something and there was the release of the song "Dela." Then we waited
for a while until things sort of got back on track (for a while). And as
everyone knows, Shirley is a very emotional person, and what has been
bothering her were the stupid rumours that kept on going around that bugged
the hell out of her. I mean, God, it's really not fair for those reporters
in WHATEVER newspapers who just keep on doing that, you know, like saying
bad things about her, criticizing her shoots and her looks, etc. I mean,
Give me a break, people! So I guess another factor that bugged Shirley is
that Faye Wong (I hate comparing, or even mentioning, this name where
Shirley's concerned) has come out ahead during the time (1993). And we all
know the reason for the sudden Faye-wave: it's when Shirley, Sandy Lam, and
Sally Yeh who got so tired of the game that they've slowed down. (It's just
like how Kelly Chen has come out so successfully last year). Poor Shirley.
I think the game has worn her out a lot. So later, "The Story of Shirley"
was released along with the karaoke and her new look, things sort of changed
a bit. I mean, this album is of a different style as compared to the former
ones. Then, she had a new haircut and things got better. "My Way" was a
very successful one -- the songs were not as commercialized as her earlier
albums. But we have to admit that Shirley's mandarin is not perfect,(yet).
Then, "All Time Favourites" was SUCH a BLAST!!! WOO-OOH!!!

I don't know... Personally I don't know Joseph Yip. I don't even know what
he looks like (although I'm a really BIG fan of Shirley's). But um...
there're still some flaws in the quality of her songs. 'Cuz I don't
actually enjoy all her songs, particularly the ones which are
"commercialized" as one would say. I like songs with Shirley's own style
(ie fast songs), and those full of her emotions (you know, the songs she
really like, seems like she wrote it herself cuz she sings them in such a
captivating way...) And I can't really say that "Oh... Joseph and Shirley
make a perfect team ... as she even says that herself, how important he is
to her and stuff." Uh-uh. Those two have been working together for years,
for god's sakes! Of course he means a lot to her. I'm not encouraging her
to leave Joseph (ie polygram). It's just that if she leaves polygram, it
means leaving Joseph which may be a loss to Shirley. But where the music is
concerned, no one knows if it's gain or loss??!! Right? I mean, a new
producer could be a spontaneous boost if she chooses the right person. Say,
Alvin Leong, -- he's been working with Faye for years. Look at her recent
albums -- Do you still see his name as her personal "producer"? Look, my
position is actually neutral in all fields, i'm just stating the pros and
cons of each issue. Now, where the record company is concerned, there seem
to be 3 choices to all fans of Shirley's: Polygram, Malboro, or Rock.
Well, I guess this all depends on Shirley's decision, and the companies who
have reached out to her. I think all record companies do at least give a
few privileges to newcomers in the beginning. Like a new album, a new style
or something. So there's the advantage of joining a new company. But Rock
surely gives a lot of freedom to singers where their musical talents are
concerned. On the other hand, (again, I'm not encouraging Shirley to stay,
or leave, but) there's something I really hate about Polygram. I think it's
always trying to rip people off by selling this new compilation of Shirley's
songs -- I mean, I already have all the songs in that album, but should I
buy it just for the sake of Shirley and the "Digital" quality, or should I
rest my case? Yes, this - I'm still arguing inside me. Obviously you and I
know what Polygram's doing. Hacken has left the company for years and
Polygram is still compiling his old songs into an album. Anyway, another
thing is the quality of Shirley's albums. Look at her songs before "The
Story of Shirley" -- many of them are really good, but half of them are so
(I hate repeating this word) "commercialized". I just hope that Polygram
will continue giving Shirley the chance to express more of herself in her
upcoming albums and allowing her more freedom in participating in the
production of her albums (if she re-news the contract). Let's see, what
else do I hate? ... Yes, I don't like how Polygram treat its singers who
have come to the end of their contracts: like Shirley and the Grasshoppers.
Oh! And something else too: Shirley's mandarin albums. I don't like the
repetition of Cantonese songs translating into Mandarin. I mean, a few good
ones are ok, but not 75% of the mandarin album!! I'm sure Shirley's fans
would want new songs. Say, for example, in her first mandarin album, "Wo
Gun Ni Zou" (#7)is really good, I think. And also in her second mandarin
album, some new songs are pretty good too.

Lastly, I hate to say this but one of the reasons Shirley has not quite many
fans is because she's too cool (But I like it). And that some people don't
quite like the way she dresses. And some don't admit her singing talents.
(For a very obvious example, my parents).

I have all her albums except her Japanese ones. I tried so hard to look for
them but never had luck. Since I understand Japanese I would want to buy
them. Does anyone know where I can obtain these long-lost CD's?

Sorry, i just wrote what comes up to my head and so i didn't spell-check or
anything. This is not a formal letter, I gather. I realize this may be a
long e-mail, and thanx for reading.

cordially,
vittoria

Dear all subscribers,

First of all, thank you very much for supporting 'e list. In order to keep
it alive, don't hesitate to reply whenever you have ideas in your mind.

Web technologies have changed so quickly. As time goes by, the
10-month-old 'e space is somehow behind others in several aspects.
Therefore, 'e space _2_ is being developed.

>From the version code, you can see this is a major upgrade. We plan to
make use of the functions available in Netscape Navigator release 3,
including frames layout, Java applet, Shockwave for Director, QuickTime
and a number of "hidden" functions performed by JavaScript. Our goal is to
make 'e space as a site that utilizes various web technologies in a smart
way, without lessening its readability.

We believe that nothing is more important than the comments from the frequent
visitors of the site. What we want to know are as follows,

8<
General :
1.Which web browser are you using? Under which platform? e.g.Win95, Mac...
2.How often do you visit 'e space?
3.How do you know 'e space? (from entertainment index page? Search engine?)
4.Apart from 'e space, which star page(s) impress(es) you most?

About current version :
1.There is much information in the site. In which section you think the
  information should be re-organized?
  How to improve?
2.Is 'e space too graphics intensive?
3.What is size of photos in gallery you prefer?
4.Any new section should be added? (section = Gallery, News, ....)
5.Which section do you like most? Which section do you seldom read?

About 'e space 2 :
1.Any suggestion to 'e space _2_ ?
2.We are going to use frames layout (to divide the browser window to
  regions). What is your opinion?
3.Are you willing to download a movie file of size 200K?

Please take your time to give your comments.

you look into the Albums section and compare the two, you'll find that in
the Mandarin version, "Forget Him" is replaced by the Mandarin version
"Pity", and there's one more change, but I can't remember. :-P

I think somebody mentioned here last week that it's supposed to be out by
next week, along with Priscilla's new album. But the rumor mill has it that
the album got delayed yet again to prevent competition with Priscilla's. So
that's really anybody's guess when it will hit the stores. To the best of
my knowledge, the CD has been sitting there, finished, since January.

WW: Really? I didn't even know a mandarin version of the CD exists.....
Where can I find it?

>Coffee & all:
>I don't think so! Does anyone knows that when e will release her new
>album?
WW: O.k. just to confirm: Priscilla's is out this week...I think it's a
mandarin one.
after that, PolyGram is releasing Shirley's CD because Priscilla has more
seniority
and thus, priority..... The CD already has a fixed price at Harmony Music
on Midland
and Finch in Scarborough, Ontario.....it's $16.99 which is low because they
anticipate that
that it well sell really well....they also told me that at least 5-10 people
will ask that same
question everyday: "When is Shirley's new CD coming?".....in a way, it is
wise to delay
the CD because sooo many people will anticipate it so when it comes out
everyone will buy
it assuming that it must be good because it took sooo long for it to come
out.....

I agree with LMK that this CD was ready probably since the beginning of
1996....it's now
in the hands of PolyGram to release it and get it ready for us
consumers....remember
we shouldn't blame Shirley for being lazy because she already finished the
work a long
time ago..... It's going to be interesting because both Sandy Lam and Kelly
Chen
both have CDs due right at the same time as Shirley's.....lots of
competition.... and the funny
thing is that they all have similar styles of singing....that beautiful
breathy sound.....
All three can speak Japanese, Chinese (cantonese/mandarin) and English...did
you all know that
Sandy is one of Shirley's favourite singers, and that both Sandy and Shirley
are Kelly Chen's
favourite singers? Neat 'eh?

How many of you also knew that Shirley is a Japanese/Chinese mix?
Interesting again.

I also wonder if PolyGram is ever going to release a Karaoke version of
"Talking to Myself".
Maybe it will somehow appear on an upcoming Shirley Kwan MTV Collection Volume 2
along with her new MTVs from the new album?

Just to let you know, I am not taping any more Shirley Kwan MTV tapes because
sooo many people already asked me and plust the fact that my house was
robbed the
other night...they took my hi-fi stuff (VCRs, LD player, etc.).....I'm waiting
for the insurance agent to reimburse me then I'll start taping those I
promised, cassettes...
Grrrr.....I'm mad!

Mmm, sorry but is Sandy going to release another CD in the forthcoming

Actually, it's not so-so, it's a bit worse than 'so-so' or 'ma-ma'... i
thought i got a bootleg or something when i first watched it, the quality
is really... i think video tape is a bit better. but considering the
cost...

I think it was Keith, who talks about the sound of the Shirley collection
CD... I've finally got it and though my friend has this 'million' dollar
hi fi system, i still don't hear any difference... do i need this
'million' dollar audile as well? Mmm, i give up... and the packing is
really 'simple and clean'. I hope they'd have something fancy with the
forthcoming CD. Any news about this CD in HK yet? Like the image of
Shirley, any songs plugged in the radio yet? Can't wait...

Okay, that's all, take care.

WW: Yeah, the concert CD plus and EP with a fast song called "Rose".
It's a cantonese song.....other songs on the EP include: Scars (Seung Hun);
Night's Too Dark (Yeh Tai Hut); Happiness, and a remix of Rose.
Looking forward to hearing this EP! Plus an LD...Sandy is really working

Yep! Her story is one of the most inspiring stories in the movie.
Lam Hoi Fung already said that she's a very professional actress
when he met her the first time.

it's really funny that Shirley (in my memory) didn't take any role
in any movie (is that right?).

Altho i waited for 1.5 hrs to see a 30min movie, i think it's really

>Hi Jaffe, thank you for your help and I'll try this later. BY the way,
I've been waiting to watch Shirley's new movie for a long time. I wish this
is a good one! Please wait for my next message and I'll try to get everyone
together to do something for Shirley.
Thanks again!
